Catatonic depression is a subtype of depression characterized by a catatonic state which makes people suffering from depression unresponsive i.e. speechless and motionless to the world around them for a prolonged period of time. The most common symptoms of this mental illness is anxiety, catalepsy ( a trance like state), difficulty concentrating, difficulty thinking, difficulty making decisions, thoughts of suicide or death.
The causes of this condition are believed to be the impact of depression causing irregular production of neurotransmitters. Many therapies and drugs are available to treat this condition. Yet further research and discoveries will be of great help in determining new symptoms as well as finding new treatments.
