Interferons are proteins that are secreted by host cells in response to viruses in the body. Interferons are typically divided among three classes: Type I IFN, Type II IFN, and Type III IFN which are used in treatment of various diseases like hepatitis and even cancer. Interferon therapy works by making the immune system of the body work with the drugs and kill the viruses, stop the spreading of cancer cells and prevent other cells from getting infected.
Health Services Research on Interferon Therapy has uncovered the psychiatric side effects of interferon therapy that include symptoms of depression, anxiety, and occasional suicidal ideation. These discoveries have become the major causes of dosage reduction or even discontinuation of this therapy. It is thus important to maintain journals like Journal of Biomedical Research & Environmental Sciences which throws some light on the interaction of the Interferon therapy with the psychological health of patients undergoing the therapy.
