Low birth weight is the condition when babies are born with weight less than 5 pounds and 8 ounces. The major factors causing low birth weight are premature delivery and fetal growth restriction. While some low birth weight babies are healthy, others may suffer from trouble eating, gaining weight and fighting off infections. Diabetes, Heart disease, High blood pressure and Intellectual and developmental disabilities are few of the long term and chronic conditions that might be the direct result of low birth weight.
