Nutritional deficiency is a condition arising due to insufficient intake or absorption of nutrients by the body. This may result in various health problems including digestion problems, skin disorders, stunted or defective bone growth, and even dementia. It is not commonly known or acknowledged that mental illnesses can also be the result of nutritional deficiencies.

Clinical Investigation on Nutritional Deficiencies compiled in journals like Journal of Biomedical Research & Environmental Sciences suggest that anxiety disorders and depression can be linked to deficiency in nutrients like vitamin D etc while nutrients like selenium helps reduce depressions. The most common nutritional deficiencies seen in patients with mental disorders are of omega–3 fatty acids, B vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Thus nutritional deficiency and mental health are more closely interlinked than we anticipate.
