Congenital dermal sinus is a type of occult spinal dysraphism. It is a result of incomplete separation of the cutaneous ectoderm from neural ectoderm. MRI can aid in identifying the subtype of spinal dysraphism however, surgery is always recommended to dissect the intradural component.
