Research Ethics

Ethical standards required for all research published in JBRES.

Ethical Research Standards

JBRES requires that all submitted research has been conducted in accordance with the relevant ethical standards and national/international regulations applicable to the type of research described.

Key Ethical Requirements

  • Human subjects — Declaration of Helsinki compliance, IRB/ethics committee approval, informed consent
  • Animal research — ARRIVE guidelines, IACUC approval, 3Rs principles (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement)
  • Clinical trials — Must be registered in an approved trial registry (e.g., ClinicalTrials.gov, ISRCTN) before submission
  • Genetic & genomic research — Must comply with applicable data privacy laws and consent requirements for sharing genetic data
  • Stem cell research — Must comply with applicable regulatory frameworks and ethical guidelines for stem cell research
  • Dual-use research — Research with potential for misuse (e.g., pathogen enhancement) must include a statement that the research poses no unnecessary dual-use risks

Clinical Trial Registration

JBRES requires clinical trials to be prospectively registered in an approved public registry. Authors must provide the trial registration number and registry name in the abstract and Methods section. Retrospective registration may be accepted with explanation in exceptional circumstances.

Reporting Standards

Authors are encouraged to follow recognized reporting guidelines:

  • CONSORT for randomized controlled trials
  • STROBE for observational studies
  • PRISMA for systematic reviews and meta-analyses
  • CARE for case reports
  • ARRIVE for animal research
